Abra Wenzel

I am a socio-cultural anthropologist committed to partnered ethnographic research with Indigenous communities in the Canadian North on settler colonialism and decolonization, Indigenous environmental relationships, land rights and resource management. I center Indigenous arts as a major point of inquiry.

My research has continously documented how Indigenous cultural values, ecological knowledge, and relationships of care are both impacted by and adapted to colonial, including climatic, pressures in the circumpolar North.

My work with Dene, Métis, and Inuvilauit communities serves to recenter Indigenous knowledge and values, and challenge colonial paradigms. Overall, true decolonized and co-collaborative research requires developing a critical consciousness about realities of oppression that diminish vital networks of connection between People and Place.
